To change the tone an alert plays in Bryx Mobile, create an alert channel with the tone you want. Then assign the channel to the alert types that should play it, such as Fire or EMS alerts from a group.
An alert channel pairs a tone with an optional critical-alert setting, which lets alerts play through Silent Mode and Focus. The tone can be one that comes with Bryx or a sound file you import.
Before you start
To import your own sound, save the file to the Files app, such as in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. For example, open a sound file from an email, tap the share button, then tap Save to Files.
Use a common audio format, such as MP3, WAV, M4A, AIFF, or CAF. Bryx Mobile keeps only the first 30 seconds of a longer file.
To use critical alerts, allow them for Bryx Mobile. In the app, go to Settings > Notifications. If Critical Alerts doesn't show Allowed, tap Open iOS Notification Settings, tap Notifications, then turn on Allow Notifications and Critical Alerts.
Step 1: Create a channel with your tone
- In Bryx Mobile, tap Settings, then tap Notifications.
- Under Channels, tap Alert Channels.
- Tap the plus button (+). The app adds a channel named New Channel and opens it.
- Under Name, replace New Channel with a name you'll recognize, such as Engine 1 Fire.
- Tap Tone, then pick a tone. The app plays each tone you tap and puts a checkmark next to it.
- To use a tone that comes with Bryx, tap it under Standard or Agency Tones.
- To use your own sound, tap Import Tone… under Custom Tones, then choose the file. The tone is named after the file and is selected for you.
- Go back to the channel.
- To have alerts on this channel play at full volume, even in Silent Mode or Focus, turn on Critical Alert. New channels start with it off. If the switch is grayed out, allow critical alerts first (see Before you start).
The channel saves automatically.
Step 2: Assign the channel to an alert type
- Go back to Notifications. Under Groups, tap Group Notifications.
- Tap your agency's name, then tap the group's name. Don't tap the switches next to them. They turn notifications on or off for every device signed in to your account.
- Under Alert Channels, tap the type of alert, such as Fire or EMS. Each type shows the channel it uses now.
- Tap your channel. The app plays its tone and selects it.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each alert type that should use this tone. For another group, repeat steps 2 through 4.
To create or edit a channel from here, tap Manage Channels.
Messaging is an alert type too. If its channel has Critical Alert on, group messages also play through Silent Mode and Focus. To avoid that, give Messaging a channel with Critical Alert off.
Channels, imported tones, and the channel each alert type uses apply only to this device. If you sign out, every alert type goes back to the Standard channel. Your channels and imported tones stay, so you only need to repeat Step 2.
Manage channels and tones
- Change the Standard channel's tone. Go to Settings > Notifications > Alert Channels, tap Standard, then tap Tone. Every alert type that uses the Standard channel plays the new tone. You can't rename or delete this channel.
- Replace a custom tone. Import a file with the same name. The new sound replaces the old one in every channel that uses it.
- Delete a custom tone. First, pick a different tone for any channel that uses it. Then, on any channel's Tone screen, swipe left on the tone under Custom Tones and tap Delete. The app deletes it right away.
- Delete a channel. Open the channel, tap Delete Channel, then confirm. Alert types that used it switch to the Standard channel.
If you used the previous Bryx app
Custom tones you imported in the previous app appear under Custom Tones automatically. Alert types that used a tone other than Standard keep that tone, but they play as normal notifications. Silent Mode and Focus can silence them.
To have those alerts play through Silent Mode and Focus:
- Go to Settings > Notifications > Group Notifications, and open each of your groups. The app sets up a channel for each tone the group used, named after the tone.
- Go back to Notifications, then tap Alert Channels.
- Open each channel the app set up, and turn on Critical Alert.
If a tone doesn't play as expected
- An alert doesn't play in Silent Mode or Focus. In Alert Channels, open the channel that alert type uses and turn on Critical Alert. Without it, alerts follow your Silent Mode, Focus, and volume settings.
- Alerts on the Standard channel don't play in Silent Mode. If you allowed critical alerts after you started using the app, the Standard channel's Critical Alert stays off. Open Standard in Alert Channels and turn it on.
- A preview played, but the alert was silent. Previews play even in Silent Mode, so they don't show whether an alert will sound. Check the channel's Critical Alert setting.
- The Critical Alert switch is grayed out. Critical alerts are off for Bryx Mobile in iOS Settings. Tap Open iOS Settings below the switch, tap Notifications, then turn on Critical Alerts.
- You can't select your file. The importer lists only audio files saved in the Files app. Save the file to Files, then try again.
- Your imported tone doesn't appear under Custom Tones. Its file name matches a tone that comes with Bryx. Rename the file, then import it again.
- "Import Failed" appears. The app couldn't read the file. Try a different file, or convert it to MP3 or WAV.
- You want vibration with no sound. Choose the Vibrate tone under Agency Tones. Bryx Mobile can't turn vibration on or off. iOS vibrates for alerts based on your Sounds & Haptics settings.
